A Look at Where 15,600 Liberal Arts Grads Got Jobs

In his post he examines the the beauty of pursuing a liberal arts degree from the perspective of Williams College, an elite institution, which has tracked where more than 15,000 of its graduates have ended up. Wondering which college will propel graduates into high-paying jobs? A recent Forbes ranking of top colleges compared how much students paid for their education and what kinds of job opportunities those graduates found when upon graduation.

Interestingly enough, three private liberal arts colleges were included in the top 10 schools and one liberals arts college outranked most of the top Ivy League schools when it came down to value of a degree. Williams College ranked #2 the last two years (only behind Princeton).

Outperforming the Ivy League and Top Technical Schools

Everyone assumes you’ll get a top notch job if you graduate from Massachusetts Institute of Technology or from Brown University, but who imagined a small liberal arts college would outshine the reputed best of the best?

Richard Nesbitt, director of admissions for Williams College tells us that the key to career success is the development of critical thinking and communication skills.

“I understand that it might be counterintuitive to think of, say, art history or pure mathematics as a wise and practical major for life-long career preparation,” Nesbitt says. “But the seminar and tutorial classes that define a Williams education teach students to think for themselves:  to challenge conventional thinking, to examine problems from different perspectives through critical reading and research, to engage in discussion and debate, to synthesize conclusions and to defend carefully considered positions both orally and in writing.”

He makes a point that is worth examining.

Are undergraduates at big name Ivy League schools or large universities being taught how to debate, discuss, negotiate and present an argument, both orally and in writing? These are the very skills needed for long term career success and desired by many top employers.

“In a world where the only constant is rapid and inevitable change,” Nesbitt continues, “it is essential for college students to develop these skills that will allow them to be global citizens and leaders, and to adapt to emerging fields and changing career paths.”

Preparing Future CEOs, Small Business Owners and Decision Makers

Many college students are happy to go to school to get a degree and settle into a fairly standard career path, but the students who want to be game-changers are looking for an exceptional education.

Adam Falk, president of Williams College, touched on the value of a liberal arts approach in his 2010 inaugural address when he quoted Jack Sawyer (Williams College president, 1961-1973), saying this:

“The most versatile, the most durable, in an ultimate sense the most practical knowledge and intellectual resources which they can now be offered are those impractical arts and sciences around which a liberal arts education has long centered: the capacity to see and feel, to grasp, respond and act over a widening arc of experience; the disposition and ability to think, to question, to use knowledge to order an ever-extending range of reality; the elasticity to grow, to perceive more widely and more deeply, and perhaps to create . . .  to live a life usefully, to help things in which one believes on their way.”

Many Majors, Many Career Opportunities

Since Williams College has received accolades for producing graduates who land high-paying jobs, it is interesting to find out exactly what career paths these Williams College graduates have pursued.

Satyan Devadoss, a mathematics professor at Williams College decided to visually display the relationship between college major and career path for some 15,600 Williams alumni. He took on this research challenge (with a class of undergraduates) and came up with a fascinating chart, displaying the impact of college major on career opportunities.

The charts map the majors and career opportunities that 15,600 Williams alumni actually took. You can check out the study summary and interactive charts here. You’ll be amazed at the wide range of careers and opportunities.

What results did Professor Devadoss uncover? His project proved that a liberal arts degree is an incredibly flexible and powerful foundation for a variety of careers.

Most students enter their freshman year in college with little idea of their long term career aspirations.  And schools know that there is a very good chance that whatever major a new student chooses will not be the same major in which they graduate.

If fact at Princeton, the admission staff tells prospective students not to worry about what major they choose on the application. Their statistics tell them that 70 percent of Princeton graduates end up completing a different major than what they selected in the application process.

Bottom Line:

At a time when the focus is on unemployment numbers and mounting student loan debt, it may seem imprudent for a student to go into college unsure of their career path. The logical response would be to have a good sense of what they want to do long term and then find the most affordable school that can provide a degree in that major. But the data says something else.

As it turns out, the better choice might just be to find the best school you can get into that provides a broad foundation in communication, analysis and presentation skills. And the first place to look is the list of private liberal arts colleges.

  1. Williams College kids are very multidisciplinary and exceptionally bright. You’ll find kids that excel in both the arts and sciences in an authentic way. They are have Renaissance type thinker profiles in large measure. In contrast, at the Ivies you’ll find kids that score great, can memorize and learn, and carry impressive stats but are intellectually less nuanced tending towards a one dimensional, deep dive. The critical thinking cultivated at Williams is supremely more valuable from a whole life perspective. The Williams student is equal in intellect and talent to a Harvard or Yale student, but will generally be better taught and better prepared to adapt and thrive outside the confines of brick walls. They will have not only a broad learning experience, but will also possess excellent writing and communications skills. Small classes with real professors engaged in dynamic discourse and learning will outperform a Graduate Teaching Assistant in a large lecture hall everyday of the week. It comes as no surprise to those aquainted that Williams is the #1 undergraduate institution in the country. It’s hard to beat Harvard, Yale and Princeton, but Williams proves it can be done through quality and rigor.

  2. The chart makes me wonder more about how they defined the categories than anything else. For example an English major working as an engineer. What the chart does not tell us if the English major went somewhere else and also got an engineering degree, or more likely is working as a tech writer for an engineering firm. Those are two very big job differences with different pay scales. The data as presented does not support the conclusion as stated that you can study what you love and then do what you want later.

  3. A catch-22 is that today’s global economy depends on STEM majors and students need to commit to these fields early.
    I was disappointed that the measure of success was monetary. Investment bankers know that Williams along with other elite schools is ripe for recruiting very smart critical thinkers. What about measuring success based on the economic value that graduates produce — the entrepreneurs, social innovators, teachers and inventors versus i-bankers and lawyers?

  4. I’m not sure how much the Williams alumni network helps — it’s a tiny school and not well represented in all markets — but it certainly has a reputation that helps, assisted by the sclerotic and self-fulfilling U.S. News rankings.

    It also recruits smart, motivated students. Is anyone surprised that smart, motivated students are successful graduates? Show me the advantage of a liberal arts education for average students. Show me the relative benefit of liberal arts over vocational programs for the smart and motivated. This type of analysis is self-serving at best, and deliberately misleading at worst.

    I agree with the author, but it is also fair to point out that Williams is a very well-endowed college founded not long after the Constitution was signed. From the late 18th century through the mid 19th century, when the first Morill Act was signed by Abraham Lincoln, liberal arts education was the dominant form of education in the U.S.

    Williams has had the luxury of time to build upon its reputation and graduate several generations of alumni. Their network, while not as large as most flagship state universities or Ivies, is impressive. The generations that have trusted the education still support it, which is why the college is praised in magazines such as Forbes.

    However, the writers from these magazines who may have attended Williams and its kin do not always share the same appreciation for the liberal arts colleges that must recruit the very good students, as opposed to the excellent ones, in order to survive.

    Had this story been about the schools that your children attended I would have found it more believable. I would have also been more convinced of the value of a liberal arts degree.

  6. “a liberal arts degree is an incredibly flexible and powerful foundation for a variety of careers.” You know, with all the recent talk about how we should all become engineers, I kept asking, “but really?” – not just because obviously different people have different talents, but also because do we really want to live in an all-engineer society (no offense – engineering is important, but so are other occupations). I was so glad to see the title of this article in my feed reader, and I’m even happier now that I have read it!
