My Son's No. 1 College Choice Is ….

My son has decided where he’s going to college in the fall. After visiting 14 colleges and applying to 8 of them, Ben selected Beloit College.

I wrote about why he decided to choose Beloit College on my other college blog over at CBSMoneyWatch. It was a long process, but the final result made all the hassles, including SAT prep, writing essays, filling out applications, visiting colleges (actually that was the fun part), worthwhile.

If you’re curious about why Ben picked Beloit, which is 90 miles northwest of Chicago (brrrr!), please click on this Beloit link and find out.

I am happy that Ben made such a great pick, but I’m sad that he’s the last chick in my nest!

As an empty nester, however, I tell myself that I’ll have more time to work on projects. Speaking of which, I’m finishing up a college eBook, tentatively titled, Shrinking the Cost of College:  152 Ways to Cut the Cost of a Bachelor’s Degree. I’ll let you know when it’s available.

If you’re wondering why Ben and I like liberal arts colleges so much, these posts will help explain:

  1. Hi Heather,

Thanks so much for sharing your daughter’s story. As you now know, there is an incredible number of wonderful schools scattered across the country — liberal arts colleges being my favorite — but not enough teenagers and parents are casting a wide enough net.

Many families unfortunately believe that you have to go to a state flagship to have a great chance at getting into med school or grad school, but that is absolutely untrue. You will boost your odds of getting into these grad schools if you attend liberal arts colleges, where you learn in small classes with lots of attention from the professors. It’s the connections with these professors that will help students receive tremendous recommendations.

  2. Lynn,
I want to thank you for your book. It opened my daughter’s eyes to liberal arts colleges. She just committed to St. Mary’s College of Maryland. We live in Nevada, so it is far away, but after talking to professors and the chairman of the health sciences advisory committee she knew this is were she wanted to study biology/pre-med. Last year 41 of the 46 students applying for med school were accepted. He was also very realistic about the difficult course work she will have to complete well to even apply to med school. We appreciated his honesty. It addition, they gave her an academic scholarship which made this school one of her more affordable.
